Go Green and recycle for the animals. Metal for Mutts
We here at Metal for Mutts will recycle your unwanted scrap metal and cans to raise funds for the spay and neutering of rescued and surrendered animals. The economy has forced many to surrender or abandon their pets. They are multiplying at an overwhelming rate. No one wants the financial responsibility of vetting these animals. If this continues the chances of disease and continued overpopulation is staggering. Please call us to help the animals. We pick up scrap and cans throughout the Central Arkansas area. We can issue a receipt for your tax deductable donation.
Thank you

April 29

To my amazement, although it should not surprise anyone.

Again I am amazed by the arrogance of some people that claim to be rescuers.

Since deciding to move back to Gold Creek the drama has begun again.

There are many people in my neighborhood that live well below the poverty scale prior to this recession. Can you all imagine how this down turn in the economy can affect already income challanged families?

Maybe not, but I can.

As a rescuer I do not feel that it is my job to "steal" or let loose any animal that is chained or not cared for in the way that I myself would like. I do feel it is my job,and all rescuers to educate and assist the families to properly care for their pets. Education is the answer to helping the animals and the people.

This past weekend while working on our kennels many of the neighbors voiced their concerns about someone in a "white van" and a "white Ford Truck" coming into our neighborhood taking animals and letting others off their chains. I have been given tag numbers and names, although they are not the real names. I know who you are and so do many of the neighbors. That in itself is not responsible. Letting an animal that has been chained loose in a busy area is not smart or helpful by any means. They tend to run into streets where there are vehicles including trucks and into yards of other animals only to be attacked or killed.

WOW that really helped.

My children and I gave some of the neighbors kennels to house their animals and we are working on getting more to solve the chaining problem.

Whomever is doing this needs to stop. You are going into a neighborhood of good ole boys and huge family connections that need help and education not more problems. You also run the risk of being shot at or having yourself beat silly by going on private property.

You do not have any right unless you are a trained and certified animal cruelty investigator or law enforcement to seize animals on anyones property . No one with any sense would let any animal loose, especially someone that is trained.

We have installed cameras on our street that will allow us to record all comings and goings of vehicles and people. These have been donated by a local business. My road is a dead end road and Sturgis can be seen from my front yard. We are asking neighbors on that road to let us install monitoring systems for that area. We are working closely with businesses in that area to offer assistance.

The FCSO knows who you are also. They have finally stopped accusing me since you keep telling people you work for our rescue. "Cindy" and her long haired friend do not work for us.  No one from my rescue would take an animal without proper authority being present.

So that being said, if you would like to help educate the people and offer suggestions of help that would be appreciated. Otherwise, leave Gold Creek and Gold Lake alone for those of us that live there and care about helping and educating the neighbors. We welcome others to help us pass out booklets that have been sent by Best Friends and HSUS to educate about chaining, nutrition, spay and neuter and dog fighting.

Thank you for your support and sympathy

To my wonderful animal loving friends,

It has been so wonderful that all of you have been there for me during these difficult times and thank you also for your words of sympathy and prayers. Loosing our beloved "little brother" Dwayne on Thursday has been the most devistating. Thank you for your calls, emails, cards and visits. You have all been so much help. Thank you for each and every act of kindness. William and Josh will be here with the animals while I go take care of Mom for a few days. Thanks to all that have taken dogs for fostering while I gone. I owe you all big time!!!!

Some thoughts on legislation

"Dangerous dog", any dog regardless of breed, breeding, type or appearance, which when unprovoked, has attacked, bitten, inflicted serious injury upon, or killed a human being or other domestic animal.

"Farm dog", any canine that works on a farm to assist humans or other animals.

"Tether", to fasten or restrain a dog or cause a dog to be fastened, chained, tied, or restrained to a stationary object.

(1) mandate spay/neuter for all dogs over 12 months of age with a possible fine of $250-$1000 except in cases where the owner has an intact permit for breeding, assistance, service and competition dogs or where a veterinarian has issued a certificate stating the dog's health would be jeopardized by a spay/neuter procedure.  Dogs over 6 months must be licensed; owners of dogs will not be issued a license without proof of spay/neuter unless exempt.

(2) allow only member of "pure bred dog clubs" to obtain intact permits for a fee of up to $500 and who must follow a "a code of ethics for breeding that includes restrictions on breeding of dog with genetic defects and life threatening health problems that are common to a breed". The new law purports to restrict breeding to once a  year but allows both the state and local government to increase that number. So not much of a restriction on breeding though there are some protections for the dogs: they can only be sold at 8 weeks of age or older, provide the intact permit number and all information to purchasers about the dog's health, vaccination history, registration and spay/neuter requirements; and advise local officials of the purchaser's identity and contact information. No requirements for inspections or providing particular care and treatment, but local governments can set further restrictions.

(3) defines as "dangerous" basically any dog that bites a human or another domestic animal unless it was defending itself or a person in the vicinity, reacting to teasing, tormenting, abuse or assault; the victim was trespassing or committing another crime, or the dog was involved in hunting, herding or predator control.  Animal control makes the determination of whether the dog should be declared "dangerous" and any disposition including a warning, fine, spay/neuter or impoundment and destruction though there is an appeals process. If an owner loses appeal of a decision to impound, he can be ordered to pay the full cost of care of the dog during the process.

A dog, regardless of breed, breeding, or type of appearance, shall be declared dangerous after an unprovoked attack in which it has attacked, bitten, inflicted serious injury upon, or killed a human being or other domestic animal. After a city or town has deemed a dog dangerous, the owner or keeper must be notified that the dog may be an immediate threat to the public.

The officer in charge of animals or the person charged with the responsibility of handling dog complaints shall have the authority of determining that a dog is dangerous. Once a dog is determined to be an immediate threat, the officer in charge of the animal or the person charged with handling dog complaints shall have the authority to remove the dog from the owner or keeper, or give a warning, order a fine, confinement, neutering, banishment or the destruction of the dog. The owner of the dog can appeal any decision of warning, fine, confinement, banishment, neutering or destruction.

The officer in charge of animals or the person charged with the responsibility of handling dog complaints has the authority, if they believe that a dog is dangerous, an immediate threat or that the animal is in danger to seize or impound the animal.

If an owner does not follow the order, a fine of $50 per day, made payable to the municipality, not to exceed $1,000, may be assessed by the city or town for each day the owner is in violation of the order. The animal control officer in each city or town shall make available such notices of judgments upon request. Records of such notices shall be maintained for a period of not less than 5 years.

Following the order of destruction of a dog by a municipality, the officer in charge of animals shall immediately take custody of the dog from the owner or keeper. If the owner or keeper appeals the order of destruction, the organization or entity charged with the responsibility of handling dog complaints and impoundment shall continue to supervise the dog's care until the owner or keeper exhausts all appeals or discontinues the appeals process.

If a court affirms the order of destruction, the owner or keeper shall reimburse the city or town for all costs incurred for the housing and care of the dog during its impoundment and throughout the appeals process. Any unpaid costs shall be recovered by the municipality in which the aforementioned owner or keeper resides by one of the following methods:

(a) a lien is placed on any property owned by the aforementioned owner or keeper;

(b) an additional itemized cost may appear on the owner's or keeper's vehicle excise tax bill; or

(c) an itemized bill for reimbursement is mailed to the owner or keeper.

Funds recovered by the municipality shall be transferred to the organization or entity charged with the responsibility of handling dog complaints and impoundment to cover the costs associated with the care of the animal. If the organization or entity falls under the management or direction of the municipality, any costs recovered will be distributed at the discretion of the municipality.

No dog may be declared dangerous if the injury or damage to a domestic animal was sustained while the dog was working as a hunting dog, herding dog, or predator control dog on the property of, or under the control of, its owner or keeper, and the damage or injury was to a species or type of domestic animal appropriate to the work of the dog.

(4) ban tethering or chaining of dogs for more than 3 hours a day with a possible fine of $250-$1000 but seems to exempt those dogs tied to a "running line, pulley, or trolley system" or in camping or other recreational areas.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Average Pet Owner:

Date: 2004-08-14, 9:47PM EDT

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Average Pet Owner:

Thank you for contacting us animal rescuers, shelter volunteers, and foster-homes about your inability to keep your pet. We receive an extremely high volume of inquiries and requests to accept surrendered animals (and none of us is getting paid, OK?). To help us expedite your problem as quickly as possible, please observe the following guidelines:

1. Do not say that you are "CONSIDERING finding a good home" for your pet, or that you, "feel you MIGHT be forced to," or that you "really THINK it would be better if" you unloaded the poor beast. Ninety-five percent of you have already got your minds stone-cold made up that the animal WILL be out of your life by the weekend at the latest. Say so. If you don't, I'm going to waste a lot of time giving you common-sense, easy solutions for very fixable problems, and you're going to waste a lot of time coming up with fanciful reasons why the solution couldn't possibly work for you. For instance, you say the cat claws the furniture, and I tell you about nail-clipping and scratching posts and aversion training, and then you go into a long harangue about how your husband won't let you put a scratching post in the family room, and your ADHD daughter cries if you use a squirt bottle on the cat, and your congenital thumb abnormalities prevent you from using nail scissors and etc., etc. Just say you're getting rid of the cat.

2. Do not waste time trying to convince me how nice and humane you are. Your coworker recommended that you contact me because I am nice to animals, not because I am nice to people, and I don't like people who "get rid of" their animals. "Get rid of" is my least favorite phrase in any language. I hope someone "gets rid of" YOU someday. I am an animal advocate, not a people therapist. After all, for your ADHD daughter, you can get counselors, special teachers, doctors, social workers, etc. Your pet has only me, and people like me, to turn to in his or her need, and we are unpaid, overworked, stressed-out, and demoralized. So don't tell me this big long story about how, "We love this dog so much, and we even bought him a special bed that cost $50, and it is just KILLING us to part with him, but honestly, our maid is just awash in dog hair every time she cleans, and his breath sometimes just reeks of liver, so you can see how hard we've tried, and how dear he is to us, but we really just can't "You are not nice, and it is not killing you. It is, in all probability, literally killing your dog, but you're going to be just fine once the beast is out of your sight. Don't waste my time trying to make me like you or feel sorry for you in your plight.

3. Do not try to convince me that your pet is exceptional and deserves special treatment. I don't care if you taught him to sit. I don't care if she's a beautiful Persian. I have a waiting list of battered and/or whacked-out animals who need help, and I have no room to foster-house your pet. Do not send me long messages detailing how Fido just l-o-v-e-s blankies and carries his favorite blankie everywhere, and oh, when he gets all excited and happy, he spins around in circles, isn't that cute? He really is darling, so it wouldn't be any trouble at all for us to find him a good home. Listen, we can go down to the pound and count the darling, spinning, blankie-loving beasts on death row by the dozens, any day of the week. And, honey, Fido is a six-year-old Shepherd-Lab mix. I am not lying when I tell you that big, older, mixed-breed, garden-variety dog are almost completely unadoptable, and I don't care if they can whistle Dixie or send semaphore signals with their blankies. What you don't realize is that, though you're trying to lie to me, you're actually telling the truth: Your pet is a special, wonderful, amazing creature. But this mean old world does not care. More importantly, YOU do not care, and I can't fix that problem. All I can do is grieve for all the exceptional animals who live short, brutal, loveless lives and die without anyone ever recognizing that they were indeed very, very special.

4. Finally, just, for God' s sake, for the animal's sake, tell the truth, and the whole truth. Do you think that if you just mumble that your cat is "high-strung," I will say, "Okey-doke! No prob!" and take it into foster care? No, I will start a asking questions and uncover the truth, which is that your cat has not used a litter box in the last six months. Do not tell me that you "can't" crate your dog. I will ask what happens when you try to crate him, and you will either be forced to tell me the symptoms of full blown, severe separation anxiety, or else you will resort to lying some more, wasting more of our time. And, if you succeed in placing your pet in a shelter or foster care, do not tell yourself the biggest lie of all: "Those nice people will take him and find him a good home, and everything will be fine." Those nice people will indeed give the animal every possible chance, but if we discover serious health or behavior problems, if we find that your misguided attempts to train or discipline him have driven him over the edge, we will do what you are too immoral and cowardly to do: We will hold the animal in our arms, telling him truthfully that he is a good dog or cat, telling him truthfully that we are sorry and we love him, while the vet ends his life. How can we be so heartless as to kill your pet, you ask? Do not ever dare to judge us. At least we tried. At least we stuck with him to the end. At least we never abandoned him to strangers, as you certainly did, didn't you? In short, this little old rescuer/foster momma has reached the point where she would prefer you pet owners to tell her stories like this:

"We went to Wal-Mart and picked up a free pet in the parking lot a couple of years ago. Now we don't want it anymore. We're lazier than we thought. We've got no patience either. We're starting to suspect the animal is really smarter than we are, which is giving us self-esteem issues. Clearly, we can't possibly keep it. Plus, it might be getting sick; it's acting kind of funny.

"We would like you to take it in eagerly, enthusiastically, and immediately. We hope you'll realize what a deal you're getting and not ask us for a donation to help defray your costs. After all, this is an (almost) pure-bred animal, and we'll send the leftover food along with it. We get it at Wal-Mart too, and boy, it's a really good deal, price wise.

"We are very irritated that you haven't shown pity on us in our great need and picked the animal up already. We thought you people were supposed to be humane! Come and get it today. No, we couldn't possibly bring it to you; the final episode of "Survivor II" is on tonight."

Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Pet Owner, for your cooperation.

Lydia,  I for one am so happy to have "met" you and I applaude your tenacity and your unconditional love for these abandoned and abused animals.  I am now your shelter's friend for life.  When I can I will help you with money to help offset the costs of taking care of these gentle souls that I will never meet on this earth (more than likely) but I'm sure I will meet them in heaven because that is for sure where they will go at the end of their lives.   I wish people who had no intention of keeping their animals never got them to begin with and all those who get a dog or cat would spay or neuter them.  I love your spunk (have read your letters to relinquishing owners and had to laugh!).  You are truly a friend and benefactor to these animals.  God bless you for your work, you will be richly rewarded.  Maybe not on this earth, but where it reallys counts, in heaven with God.  With warmest aloha,  Pauline
